Doctors Warn Citizens Not To Eat Unhealthy Fried Foods
LAHORE: The consumption of fried items, including samosas and pakoras after iftar is causing various diseases, including typhoid and gastroenteritis, to spread among people, senior doctors told Daily Times on Saturday.
They said the trend of eating fried items bought from bazaars is “unhealthy”.
Talking to Daily Times, the professor of medicine at Sir Gangaram Hospital, Dr Khalid Mehmood, said the habit of eating fried and spicy food should be “discouraged”, as food outlets do not meet hygiene standards. He said the same oil is used several times, which causes an upset stomach, and can cause scores of other diseases. He said more than 40 patients of typhoid, gastro and diarrhoea visited his hospital everyday. He said home-cooked samosas and pakoras were not harmful, but only if they were not fried with a lot of oil and spices.
“Any food which has been lying uncovered for a long time should not be eaten as it can cause diarrhoea… drinking a lot of water with salt content is essential,” Institute of Public Health Dean Dr Shakila Zaman said.
