A MAN was killed and a police constable received bullet wounds after a clash between the residents of Karol Ghati, Gujjarpura, and the Communication and Works Department staff busy in the construction of Lahore Ring Road on Saturday.

According to police, the affectees of Ring Road Project were against the construction of the road and they used to stage protests against the contractors to stop the development work. On Saturday, the workers of the CWD busy in the work were pelted with stones by a large group of people. On receiving information, the local police reached the spot and tried to take control of the situation while the workers saved their lives by hiding behind the vehicles and under the drain. The policemen led by SP Civil Lines Haider Ashraf fired teargas on the protestors but some of the people among them opened fire on the police. As a result, constable Iftikhar received two bullets in his chest. He was taken to a local hospital and his condition was stated to be critical.

Meanwhile, one of the protestors received a brick injury on his head and died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. The deceased was identified as Ghafar, a resident of Karol Ghati, father of nine.

The protestors blocked the road for over four hours which created massive traffic mess on Bund Road and its linking arteries. The commuters were stuck up on the road for hours which added to their miseries. Some of the ambulances, carrying critical patients, were also stuck up on the road. The protestors also set two vehicles including a tractor on fire to register their protest. The police high-ups reached the spot, tried to convince the protestors but failed to reach any conclusion till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested ten protestors out whom four were involved in firing shots on the police personnel. No case was registered till the filling of this report.
