Thousands May Die In Floods, Fears Qazi
FORMER Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Qazi Husain Ahmed has warned that if the government, armed forces and the nation do not make joint efforts to save the flood affected people, thousands of people may die.
Addressing a press conference at Mansoorah on Friday, he deplored those claiming to be people’s representatives but still fast asleep while the masses were dying due to rains and floods. He said the Disaster Management Authority was nowhere in sight while his efforts to be in touch with the President, Prime minister and KP Chief Minister had been unproductive.
Qazi Husain Ahmed said the situation in Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsada, Swat and Kohistan was alarming. The people have been on their rooftops for the last three days and the water is hardly three or four feet below the ceiling and still rising.
The government, he said, was waiting for water to recede while the water level was still going up. Mud houses have already collapsed. Only one helicopter was hovering over Nowshera where the number of trapped people was in lakhs. In this situation, only the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Al-Khidmat Foundation were around to provide relief and succor to the affectees.
He stressed the federal government to come to the aid of the provincial government in this calamity. He said an emergency had been declared in the Khyber but the official machinery had not moved as yet, as no measures were being taken to rescue the affectees or to supply them food.
