GCU Trains Professionals In PECS
Lahore: The Alumni Society of the Government College University Lahore Clinical Psychology Department has organized a training workshop on “Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)”, a highly effective method of non-verbal communication with Autistic children who have delays in speech development.
The clinical psychologists and professionals from all over Punjab attended the workshop. Addressing the participants, resource person Sajjad Ahmad said that PECS uses pictures instead of words to help children communicate and has proved to be very useful in clinics and schools.
He said a child can be trained in PECS by a parent, caregiver, or therapist who has learned about the method. In the early phases of PECS training, the child chooses a picture of a desired food, and receives the food in exchange for the picture.
Getting the food is the positive reinforcement for using the picture to communicate. Sajjad said that as the child begins to understand the usefulness of communication, the hope is that he will then begin to use natural speech.
