Kalabagh Dam Could Have Saved Samage: Taseer
PUNJAB Governor Salman Taseer has said recent floods could not haved caused much devastation had the Kalabagh dam been constructed.
Talking to media at Governor’s House on Tuesday after dispatching a consignment of trucks arranged by Pakistan Red Crescent Society carrying relief items for flood affectees of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Governor stated in his personal opinion, Kalabagh Dam should be constructed as nearly 75 percent of water was wasted due to lack of a major water reservoir like it.
However, he asserted that the KB Dam had become a political matter and there must be a political solution to this issue like NFC Award and 18th Amendment in which consensus was developed among political forces.
To a question over vehement criticism of President Zardari for his foreign visit at a time when the country was facing a massive natural disaster, the governor said the president wasn’t out on any personal visit but it was an official tour whose sole agenda was the interest of Pakistan.
He said the president had visited Britain, France and was meeting Friends of Pakistan, adding that any kind of criticism wasn’t justified.
The governor said the countries, including France and England, had also announced support to Pakistan for the flood affectees which was a positive sign.
To a question, he said he wasn’t interested in ‘photo shoots or disaster tourism’ and would certainly visit flood-hit areas but at the moment, all possible efforts should be made from all sides for the flood affectees. To another query, he said that if Sharifs had paid their taxes, the country wouldn’t have faced much problems.
