Sri Lanka Cricket Board appointed Lasith Malinga on Wednesday as the captain of the Sri Lanka T20 team till March 2015. Lasith Malinga who led Sri Lanka team in ICC T20 World cup tournament which was held in Bangladesh, in that tournament Malinga was performing his responsibilities as the vice captain of the team but due to restriction of few matches over the captain Dinesh Candimal for a slow over rate against New Zealand, Malinga took responsibilities as captain of the team and he performed quite brilliantly and led his team to the victory of ICC World T20 title and due to his superb performance in ICC world T20 now Lasith Malinga is the officially new captain of Sri Lanka T20 team.
Chandimal had taken captaincy in 2013 from Angelo Mathews and he led Sri Lanka team in 12 games and from these 12 games he won eight games. But now as Lasith Malinga is the new captain of Sri Lanka T20 team, so he will be assisted by Lahiru Thirimanne, who has been named the vice captain for T20, ODI and for Tests also. Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews, who led Sri Lanka to the victory in Asia Cup in March has been retained as the captain of the one day team and he will lead the Sri Lanka ODI team till ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.
Sri Lanka Cricket Board still retained Angelo Mathews as the captain of Test team, due to her wonderful captaincy in the tour of Bangladesh in February, where he led his team to victory by winning three Test matches series by 2-0, so he will still perform his duties as the captain of Test team. All these changes held so quickly because of the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka to United Kingdom in May, where they have to play two ODIs against Ireland and five ODIs, One T20 and two Tests against England.
