Rafi Peer, SUPARCO build ‘mud house’ for flood victims
By Maira Fayyaz
LAHORE: In order to highlight the positive value of mud housing, particularly in flood areas, Rafi Peer group in collaboration with the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) inaugurated the sample of mud houses on Friday at Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop Cultural Centre.
The basic objective of SPARC and Rafi Peer is to suggest a possible way of helping the flood victims in building their homes and also to show that mud is an attractive option of environmentally friendly, energy-efficient construction material even in urban areas. The purpose of the exercise is to enable the future decision-makers to consider the traditional mud-construction in a new light and to integrate it into future planning. The usage of environmentally friendly and biologically cheap construction materials and traditional construction forms combined with alternative technology, can also open doors for future solutions in urban areas. The project appears to be closely related to cultural activity, in essence however it is a construction concept.
