This is one of the most encouraging, pleasant and proud news for the entire Pakistani nation that former Pakistani Cricketer and the captain of Pakistani Crciket Team Shahid Afridi has been appointed as the ambassador of goodwill for the United Nations anti-narcotics agency. This has been declared in a press release issued by United Nation’s Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It was further said in the statement that Shahid Afridi has been appointed because of his marvelous talent and it is the recognition of outstanding record in the sports of cricket in Pakistan as has been named as ‘Boom Boom Afridi’ by his fans.

Looking very delighted and pleased to accept the new job, Shahid Afridi said, “I have never done anything halfway and will give my all to my new role, I hate to see drugs ruin the lives of young people. If I can convince even one boy or girl to shirk the habit, I will be proud [of myself].”

UNODC Pakistan representative Jeremy Douglas further elaborated the motive behind the appointment of Shahid Afridi for this responsible job and said “He plays with heart. Shahid Afridi is a role model who can speak powerfully against drug abuse. Young people see in him the courage to push boundaries and the will to go on when things get tough.”

He further told that Shahid Afridi will promote and encourage healthy habits, emphasizing positive values. He will visit schools and educate young boys and girls about it. Telling the agenda of UNODC for 2012, Jeremy said that this year will witness the impact of the work of UNODC in Pakistan and highlight the need to curb drug use and associated crime.

Shahid Afridi will participate in different activities including youth cricket tournament, the commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse, raising awareness about the importance of ethics in sports, advocating gender-responsive services for drug users and promoting knowledge of drug and HIV/AIDS issues.
